What most people don't realize is that there are many different parts that make a boat run. Knowing what they do will help you better understand the ins and outs of boating. Knowing each part's function can make your time on the water more enjoyable and less stressful. The Hull

The hull is the main body of a boat. It can be made from wood or fiberglass. It protects the rest of the boat from water and waves and provides a base for it to float. If you want a good boat, then you’re going to need a good hull that will keep water from coming in and also provide enough space for cargo or passengers inside.

The Keel

The keel is the piece that runs along the bottom of the boat, right in front of the rudder. It's there to provide directional stability and to help prevent rocking motions. A good, strong keel can make all the difference when you're out on open water. You can build a strong keel for your boat by making sure that it's heavy and stays low to the ground.

The Rudder

The rudder is found on the aft (back) part of the boat. It is just below the stern. It helps keep a boat going in a straight line and allows it to turn sharply. One common problem with boats is that they tend to sway from side to side because their hulls are flat and don't have any "feet." The keel helps this issue a lot, but a rudder can do wonders.

The Stern

The stern is the back portion of a boat. The rudder is usually located here, along with the propeller and propulsion system if the boat is so equipped. The rudder and propeller create a push toward the stern. They allow the stern to steer and move through the water. The propulsion system uses energy from burning fuel or wind to propel the boat forward and create movement. A vessel's propeller and rudder are located on its stern.

The boat is a beautiful vessel that symbolizes freedom, adventure and excitement. It's also an incredible resource for learning more about yourself.
