Learn About the History of the Yamaha® WaveRunner®
Even though Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. has been involved in boat design since 1960, it wasn't until 1986 that they made their first big splash in WaveRunner® design with the launch of The Marine Jet 500T. Known for smooth handling and a sleek design, this propelled the company as the leader in the personal watercraft (PWC) category. 1980s
After the launch of the WaveRunner 500 in 1986, the first "sit-down" PWC, Yamaha introduced The WaveJammer 500 the following year. The first sit-down solo seater, the WaveJammer, also featured a small hull and fixed steering to give riders more control.
1990's
In 1990, Yamaha launched the WaveRunner III 650, the first 3-passenger PWC that featured a reverse drive. The stand-up model SuperJet 650 followed in '92, giving riders the ability to perform acrobatics. Big, powerful models appeared in the mid-'90s, first with WaveBlaster 700, then WaveRaider 700, and the three-seater WaveVenture 700. By the end of the decade, WaveRunner models retained their powerful engines yet scaled back in size, creating a sleeker appearance. In 1999, Yamaha launched the SUV1200, the first 4-passenger PWC, and the XL1200 Limited, which featured an impressive 155 hp.
2000s
The 2000s began with more impressive models, including the WaveRunner FX140, the first 4-stroke engine PWC. By 2004, Yamaha had debuted the FX Cruiser High Output models, which improved upon the older 4-stroke models and are praised through the industry for their smooth handling. The VX cruiser started production in 2007 and featured the first of its kind cruiser seat. The decade's end saw the smoothest ride all launched with the FZR models.
2010s
By 2012, Yamaha launched the FX Cruiser SHO and FX Cruiser HO, a lightweight monster with incredible stability and power. A new handlebar system was created in 2015, called RiDE, the first handlebars Dual Throttle Controls. Yamaha took things to a whole other level in 2019 with the debut of WaveRunner FX Cruiser SVHO, a luxury performance PWC that includes color touchscreen instrumentation and self-draining footwells.
Yamaha Today
In 2022, Yamaha debuts the JetBlaster and Cruiser and Sport models, including the luxury FX series. Added components include a complete infotainment system and a glass color touchscreen. The SVHO and HO models feature a rugged, 1.8L Marine Engine for maximum performance.
