Pre-Ride Checklist

Familiarize yourself with state and local laws, as well as the body of water before you ride, such as currents and shallow spots. Another good idea before hitting the water is to check all your safety equipment is in order, including life jackets and fire extinguishers. Make sure to secure any additional gear and get comfortable with the operating panel.

Launching Off

Before you launch, turn your battery switch on and attach the emergency stop lanyard to the emergency stop switch, and flip it to "run". If the motor is flipped up, trim it down so that the propeller is in the water before starting. Turn the engine on after you get the motor angle you want. Pull the dock lines and hit the throttle out of neutral into forward and slowly pull away from the dock. If you don't have someone to push off, make sure you detach the emergency lanyard before leaving your seat.

Throttle Use

Cruising the water in a pontoon is simple, but new owners should practice with the throttle by speeding up, slowing down, and reversing the boat. While there are no brakes on a pontoon, you should familiarize yourself with the reverse throttle, which acts as a brake and brings the boat to a stop faster than neutral. When moving forward with your throttle, you'll increase the speed. Once you're familiar with the forward and reverse features, you'll easily be able to navigate from faster speeds and coming to a stop.

Trim Engine

The trim function helps with the pontoon's functionality by moving the propeller away from the ground in shallow water. Practice this feature in deep water first. once you get the hang of it, cruising in shallow water will be a breeze. By utilizing the trim feature, you'll also save your propeller from possible damage in shallow depths. Once you're really comfortable, you can even use the trim feature by feel and sound.

Always be aware pontoons act like a sail in heavy winds and increase your motor power accordingly. Now you can start having fun! You can learn more by reaching out to Chatlee Boat & Marine in Sanford, North Carolina, serving Raleigh and Greensboro.
