Launching a personal watercraft (or PWC) can be difficult, especially if it’s your first time. One wrong move can damage your PWC and trailer, leading to a hefty repair bill. Luckily, Chatlee Boat & Marine has created this guide on how to safely launch your PWC.

Ready Your Trailer

Before you do anything else, make sure that your PWC’s trailer is functioning correctly, with no damaged tires or broken hook-ups. You should also double-check that your PWC is secure before attempting to tow it. One common problem to look out for is the trailer’s license plate bending or snapping off when you hit a bump in the ramp. If you are worried about this happening to you, try holding your license plate in place with heavy-duty zip ties instead of bolts.

Practice In Advance

The part of launching a PWC that trips most people up is getting the trailer properly aligned. We recommend that you practice maneuvering with a trailer attached in an empty lot. You can use cones to approximate a launching ramp.

Arrive Prepared

Instead of going right to the water when you arrive at the launch point, pull over. This will allow you to put on your lifejacket, attach the killswitch, stow your supplies, etc. without blocking others who need to use the dock. Once you are ready, loosen the winch straps and safety chains on your PWC so that it floats when you put it in the water.

Release Your PWC Into The Water

We recommend that you start your engine while you are in line to make sure that you don’t end up stalled on the ramp. Once it’s your turn, slowly reverse your trailer into the water, stopping right at the water’s edge so that the PWC starts to float. Stop the vehicle, get out, and pull the PWC into the water. If you’re alone, tie up your PWC to keep it safe while you park your car.

Pull Away From the Dock

Trying to start your PWC in shallow water can result in the intake sucking up rocks and debris. Instead, wait until the water is at least three feet deep before you get on. Take things slow at first, steering away from the dock and giving everyone plenty of room. Wait until you’re out on the open water before you open up on the throttle.
